A few things you need to know to serve a meal at The Crossing:
-
You can sign up to serve a meal for the 2025/2026 school year here: https://volunteersignup.org/WXWBH
Or you can reach out to Andi at office@crossingministries.org !

We ask you to prepare a regular meal for around 30 HUNGRY Students (this is not counting any people you bring). Please check with Andi in advance to see if this # is accurate for the week you will be serving. We always plan a little higher than regular attendance because we always want to have enough food – in case more show up than we anticipate. Students will take leftovers home with them and any you leave us, we will use to feed students at meetings during the week. Your gift keeps on giving all week! ☺

We have a few special dietary needs so we ask that you prepare some food for those who have any of these needs: vegans (can include vegetarians), gluten intolerance, dairy intolerance, allergies to eggs (even in baked goods), peanuts, and shellfish.
-
Only a few servers are needed since they are setting it out for the students to serve themselves. Two people can handle it easily (but you are welcome to bring as many as you choose). If you bring a youth group and would like them to meet with our students/staff after the meal, please contact Mike at least a week in advance so we have time to ask students if they can meet with your group.

We have a regular home size oven, 4 burner stove and a food warmer. It’s best to have food cooked and heated before it comes to The Crossing -- and able to keep hot in your crock pots, or our oven or food warmer..
-
We provide all the drinks, plates, cups, silverware, and serving spoons (and some serving bowls or platters). SOMETIMES we have condiments, dressings, butter . . .
If you would like to make sure the items you need are available when you arrive, please ask Andi by Thursday of the week before you are serving with a list of items you will need in the kitchen (as our kitchen doesn’t always have all the ladles, bowls, spatulas, . . . that are needed). We will do our best to have them on hand for you (we use these materials in two kitchens as we do not have enough to cover both kitchens).
If you need salad dressings, butter, condiments or other staples ask Andi if we have enough of these in our fridge before you purchase any new items.

We invite you to bring a dessert (which is always a favorite) if you choose, but if not, we can provide candy and/or cookies. Please let Andi know if The Crossing needs to have a dessert available. Gluten free and dairy desserts are a treat for the students who are intolerant, but please don’t feel obliged. Please mark them if you bring any. Fresh fruit has also been a favorite of students.

We ask you to arrive around 5:30 pm to get set up (that should give you plenty of time to set up). We are located at 1127 University Ave. which is on the corner of University and Charter Streets. The entryway to our lot is off Charter Street, and you can park in any of the parking spaces labelled “Reserved for The Crossing Staff #1-5” . We ask that you need 2 or less parking spaces during your visit. If you need more parking spaces, please let Andi know.

Our service begins at 6:00 pm and the meal is served as part of the Worship. We do ask you to do all the set up before the service and join in the Service and the Meal.. If you try to do anything during the service, it is distracting to the service (which is in the same room as the meal is served).

Following the meal, there is a bit of clean up as your servers take back your dishes and we send extra food home with students, but it should not be much work for you. Usually you are able to leave sometime between 7:15-7:45 p.m. Some groups choose to help us do the dishes (silverware, plates, and a few other things) and clean off tables.. Other servers must leave quickly. If you stay to help, we are very grateful. If you must leave, we understand. Helping to clean is a bonus for us, not an expectation.
